In Situ Synthesis of Core-Shell-Structured SiCp Reinforcements in Aluminium Matrix Composites by Powder Metallurgy

SiCp reinforced aluminium matrix composites (AMCs), which are widely used in the aerospace, automotive, and electronic packaging fields along with others, usually prepared by ex situ techniques. However, interfacial contamination poor wettability of techniques make further improvement their comprehensive performance difficult. In this paper, AMCs theoretical volume fractions 15%, 20%, 30% powder metallurgy reaction via an Al-Si-C system. Moreover, a combined method external addition is to investigate synergistic effect on AMCs. SiC particles can be formed indirect reaction: 4Al + 3C → Al4C3 3Si 3SiC 4Al. This mainly through diffusion Si, Si diffuses around then reacts form SiCp. The have smooth boundary, particle size approximately 1–3 μm. A core-shell structure having good bonding was generated, consists core shell thickness 1–5 yield strength ultimate tensile significantly increased constant ductility adding 5% for Al-28Si-7C. graphite has significant properties alloy. criterion determine whether complete achieved, forming mechanism analysed.
